Offering a mixture of adventure and luxurious tranquillity, the Four Seasons Resort, Sharm El Sheikh, is the ideal venue for winter sun seekers that demand that extra touch of quality from their holiday. Located on the Southern tip of the Sinai peninsular, Sharm El Sheikh has long been held in high regard for the excellent snorkelling and scuba diving unique to the vivid corals and dazzling fish inhabiting the Red Sea. It is now worthy of so much more with the construction of the impressive Four Seasons Resort.
As you would expect from any Four Seasons Resort, their newest addition (opened to the public in May 2002) is not only beautifully built and sympathetic to the dramatic local landscape, but offers a quality of service unrivalled by its competitors in the region. All 136 guest rooms feature a private balcony or terrace - most with stunning views of the sea. Sumptuous suites, many with interconnecting doors, offer the most elegant and secluded surroundings. The breath-taking Royal Suite, as its name suggests, is truly fit for a king and has its own private garden, where guests can take breakfast each morning, and beach away from the main resort. Its neighbour, the Presidential Suite, would also delight even the most discerning of tastes and, like all the suites, has its own private pool. Its garden terrace affords panoramic views across the resort that extend to the sea, allowing a vista of the lunar-like landscape of Tiran Island and picturesque sunsets every evening. The fabulous swimming pool makes a spectacular centrepiece to the resort, tempting even the most determined sun-worshipper from their comfortable chaise-longues several times a day. Conscientious attendants ensure that your every whim is catered for, with cold flannels and complimentary fruit juices on offer to combat the height of the midday sun. With four restaurants to choose from, dining is an experience of its own. Mediterranean, Moroccan and Lebanese dishes, as well as popular international items, are all available at the Arabesque restaurant, while allowing guests to enjoy views of the Red Sea should they choose to dine al fresco. Exquisitely decorated with a romantic courtyard lit by candles and open to the stars, Il Frantoio offers delightful Italian fare with specialities drawn from northern Italy. The Reef Grill, located by the beach, is a more casual environment offering tranquil tables by the sea or the invigorating atmosphere of the main dining area. At the main pool there is another choice for guests, the Waha pool bar and restaurant. This serves a selection of salads and asian- influenced casual fare and is open from lunch to dusk. The resort’s opulent Spa offers a range of superb treatments and massages, in a sumptuous environment, to ensure you return home glowing with good health. For the more active, tennis courts and the resort’s Gym provide no excuses to take a break from your keep-fit regime. There is also a long list of activities and days away from the hotel. A coral reef, teeming with aquatic life, offers snorkelling right from the resort’s sandy beach, and the opportunities to go scuba diving, both from the hotel and on other organised trips, abound.
Sinai’s striking national park, Ras Mohammed, is a must-see both for the beautiful and unspoilt views on land and the extra-special snorkelling available in its many lakes. Take our advice and go by land, although trips by boat are available, to see the many different facets of the area, and use the hotel’s concierge service to ensure that the best and most knowledgeable guides show you around. Day-long tours include the impressive Coloured Canyon and Dolphin Bay, a visit to the unique St Catherine’s Monastery, the chance to sample local life in the markets of Dahab and the opportunity to take a traditional tea with the Bedouin under the stars of the desert. If you crave more adventure, horse riding and quad biking are available both in the desert and along the beach. I was particularly impressed with my two-hour horse ride, which saw me able to sample a sunset in the desert on a lively yet responsive Anglo Arab. Naama Bay, the local town, struck me as a commercial area that had been built to accommodate the flourishing hospitality trade. I was told that there are some first-rate speciality restaurants, fish and Arabic food both being highly recommended, but was not able to find the time to sample these. However, I have been assured that they are well worth a try. To sum up, my stay in the Four Seasons Resort at Sharm El Sheik impressed, particularly when you take into consideration the newness of this particular hotel. With the recent addition of a scheduled, non-stop flight from Heathrow to Sharm El Sheikh, this is the perfect winter vacation for all quality travellers who expect superb service, dining and luxury from their hard-earned holiday.
